How does an advocacy center work?

Typical Progression of the
Children's Advocacy Center, Inc. Process

Children's Advocacy CenterWhen a person suspects child abuse, it is their responsiblity to call either the Kansas hotline number (1-800-922-5330), their local SRS agency, or their local Law Enforcement agency. That agency will then evaluate the report. If warranted, a preliminary investigation is then conducted. If a forensic interview is needed, the child will be brought to the Children's Advocacy Center, Inc.(CAC). The CAC is a child-friendly facility where the child can tell their story at their own pace. After the initial interview, SRS or Law Enforcement staff will determine if further investigation is warranted. The team members will work with family members to determine what course of action will be best for the child. If the case is prosecuted, the child and their familiy will receive supportive services from CAC staff and volunteers during and after the proceedings. Every child and their family will receive appropriate referrals to community agencies. Some of these referrals include: Medical services, Mental Health, Crisis Resource Center, and other community services. All of the abuse cases are reviewed by the Children's Advocacy Center, Inc. Case Review Team.
